1. This scarf is everywhere.
2. This scarf is even worn by high school students.
3. This scarf has become a mechanical part of wannabe chic people.

5. This scarf is still advertised in the latest Urban Outfitters catalog and is paired with a military jacket. The horror.

I am not sure if I am delighted or puzzled to write about a new trend spreading among stylish guys in the city. It is quite simple since it derives from an existing silhouette, but little more updated and perhaps twisted. Gone is the indie/nerdy/rocker vibe and replaced with a tough,very don't-f-with-me attitude.

The observed concept is a combination of Timberland tan work boots and skinny jeans. Perhaps this is the next step guys look for in shoes where they switch from beated Converse or white sneakers to Tims. While it doesn't present a logical resolution to this so-called problem or rather a desired change, it is something we should be aware of. How far can we go when interpreting wardrobe elements from different lifestyles?

Can the ultimate staple of hip hop culture be mixed with an essential part of modern day fashionable guys? Skinny jeans and Tims? While people search for inspiration everywhere, it does not have to mean taking action upon anything that is around us. Finally, I am all about taking ricks when dressing, but I think this might be too much.

Originality does not have limits, but acceptability does.

Stripes have taken such a big turn lately, that it seems every single store on Earth has some sort of a striped top. I think one of most unfortunate designs for a stripe to be incorporated is a henley. Henleys are usually solid colored tops, mostly in dark tones and add a little touch of chic with the added buttons. I'd never ever imagine a striped henley--it's just too much. Too much colors, too much fussy, too much busy... it just doesn't look right. It quite disturbing, if you ask me.

This is essential reading for any 60's fanatic and from the looks of it around us these days, there are many out there. I am talking about half of the city's girls who are channeling the entire 60's look and many others who favor skinny jeans and striped tops. "Popism" is quite a resourceful book about arts and not just Andy Warhol's, but the whole Pop Art movement. Each year of the decade is discussed in details, and Andy dashes anything from fashion to dirty secrets of his friends. A must-read.

To me, design will always be about details: width of a button hole, collar height, cut of the neckline, the stitching... So, when I saw this wonderful jacket, my focus was on the drawstrings falling on the side. I love the idea that you can tie them up, which creates this bunching up on the sides. Also, the cropped proportion and the subdued grey plaid add to an additional admiration. By Marc.

Bergdorf are trying to be progressive and against popular demands. While most of the city's fashiony guys favor the slim silhouette, whose main element is the skinny jean, they present us with an ultra wide cotton pant. I haven't seen such a loose pant since the late 90's. I must admit that it looks odd to me and I probably won't wear this look. Perhaps, it's just the most logic opponent to the skinny jean?

Sequence cardigan for men is one of those things that you want really bad, but then you realize that it's not suitable to wear in the streets. Of course, it looks dashing on the model but I think it's quite hard to pull off as a day wear. I'm sure some guys might wear this, but in reality how many of them are there?

With the constant suffocation of futuristic clothing around us, we might soon forget about about the beauty of carefree bohemia. Just like that shirt above--wide v-neck, which falls loosely. Besides the fact that the rest of the look is not exactly bohemian, that shirt is very much so. Considering the fact how bad many people get dressed for the gym, this eidtorial with one of my favorite models ever, Malgosia, reminds me to speak up on this little issue. I know that it's just the gym and you are going to end up sweating, but do people really need to wear jeans when they work out? Or still wear Converse with holes when one does push ups or is on the treadmill? I especially don't understand when gay men wear camouflage shorts to the gym? Does it make them look more stronger or tougher? It beats me.

Is it hard to stick with a simple, white tee and shorts? I suppose it is.

I am avid collector of men's cardigans, and just love layering them with anything possible. Mostly, I own cardigans in dark colors and only one is of a lively color. It's tomato red. In any event... I've been searching for a "pop", "electric" cardigan that I will wear this spring. You know, menswear is quite boring, although this notion is slightly changing. This brings me a conclusion that I still haven't found bold colored cardigan until I came across this ad. Now, this is what I really need. I crave it like diet Pepsi. Yellow. Can it get any better?

This summer will definitely be the right time to wear cropped or rolled cotton pants. I used to wear rolled khakis with brown flip flops and washed, wrinkled tee during my high school days. I was trying to achieve that Californian, laid-back, beachy, i-don't-care-about-anything, god-i'm-so-happy look.

Well, things have changed since then. The entire concept is different and not just in terms of clothing choices, but in my state of mind. I will certainly not wear flip flops or have beach thoughts; this is going to be a city look. Refinement, classy with a twist, art nouveau went bohemian with a big touch of modern minimalism are some of the traits when describing this on my terms.

The original idea occurred to me while looking at photos of well dressed and very elegant men on the Sartorialist. I immediately loved the look, but sensed that it was little bit too dressy for my taste. Therefore, I've been playing with many ideas of how to still keep the pant, but make it more downtown. While I'm still trying to put together pieces for achieving and perfecting this look, the main segment, the pant, has been found. Slim, light and affordable at Uniqlo. Meanwhile, Barney's suggests some options, and if you've been reading carefully, you'd know by now that I would definitely lose that tie.

I simply love this new take on the traditional men's button down shirt. Short collars ring Raf Simons for me, but as you can see, apparently other designers are spreading the love. These shirts blend quite well with the entire slim look because of the collar width, which is slender and restrained. It also elongates the neck, resulting in an elegant, swan look--but in a very cool, unfussy way. So, why not just indulge. I already have one short collared shirt from Zara (unfortunately), but my goal is to find a short sleeved version, so that I can alternate it according the weather.

I liked Cloak. I never was too crazy about it, but it grew on me, I suppose. Perhaps it was more of a peer influence than anything. In any regard, talk about Cloak nostalgia. As the last collection hits the stores, I get reminded of some cool products this man made. For example, the killer, i-want-them-right-now, back zipper, low boots. Wow!!! Aren't those just the greatest?

I love the thought given here because while everyone is doing heavy metals, copper, lots of gold and silver, they go for a very pure and simple idea of something that was futuristic in the past. When a season is full of cropped pants and lean clothes, it comes naturally that outwear might get an alternation of its own. Traditional outwear such as peacoats were cropped at Bottega Veneta and Lanvin, as well as formal three button jackets at Dries Van Noten. It may come to one's mind that the wide spread approach to cropped and slim silhouettes was contributed by Hedi Slimane of Dior Homme, but it goes much further back in the past. What about the 60's Mod guys or the downtown art darlings who were by Andy Warhol's side at the Factory and Studio 54? Or even better, the 70's disco goers? Their looks very quite trim, cropped and subdued. Those times can be absolutely felt as most current at this season's collections.

With designers embracing color as a primary source of their presentations, one does not associate fall and winter with dullness and grey skies anymore. Especially when the dominant color of the season is red. It was definitely a favorite among designers and they applied it on almost anything; from straight leg pants at Lanvin to patent leather sneakers at Dolce&Gabbanna. Also, red has been in the public's eye for some time now as a campaign drive at Gap regarding their RED campaign for good cause. A change for something more vibrant might be needed this upcoming fall after a saturation of dark green as the color of last season.

I think that by now, we all know that Kane is an exceptional young talent who has become a media darling. I am a big fan of his collections, and his most current one showed how gifted and creative he is.

But, then there is this thought of mine, which occurs many times for young or older designers who do dresses as a main ingeredient of their collections. Why, oh why. Really. Do you see women wearing dresses 24/7? Even if you do, that population is less than 5%. Kane's collection consisted of over 80% dresses, and some daywear which was not enough. I think that one is considered a good designer after they show the world they can do daywear. Because at the end, you can always find a pretty dress. Everyone makes them, and everyone sells them. Whether finding a good, chic yet not fashion-fictim looking daywear looks is so hard to get by nowadays.

Oh, and by the way, don't you think that Sarah Mower sounded so highly thrilled about Kane more than anyone in her entire history as a fashion journalist? Just wow.

trend: fall 07: the long sweater

Volume and proportions has been the ultimate trend of Fall 2007. As mostly dominant in women's wear, this design concept crossed over to the men's zone in a form of long, loose sweaters and it took a great part of many presentations. The biggest influence was felt at Prada, who showed overpowering, relaxed tops with ultra slim pants. Comfort is definitely a key element in pushing this trend for retailers as well as a new, brave alternative for an updated fall wardrobe. An excellent idea for this look, is layering, which can be achieved with warm overcoats. Perhaps, the best attribute is that one can dress it up as Christopher Bailey showed for Burberry Prorsum or make it casual just like Dries Van Noten.

For the upcoming fall and winter, warmth may not be an option for today's man. Designers from the ever elegant Stefano Pilato for Yves Saint Laurent to the downtown favorite Hedi Slimane for Dior Homme, have been embracing a new, fresh concept for the traditional men's pant. They showed a vast selection of cropped pants, which was usually worn with a longer, but slightly leaner top. The main trick to this trend is the sock issue, which can be rather challenging for one who is not color savvy. However, as these designers showed, best option is to go sock less or if you truly want to be original pick a bold, contrasting color that pops, as shown by Alexander McQueen.

I just saw this the other day at the Prada store on 5th Avenue, and it brought back some memories. I don't know about you guys, but when I was little (3-7) I used to wear socks with my sandals. I am not quite sure if it was for protection or just fashion of that time, but I clearly remember that many kids at the kindergarten were carrying the same look. This was the mid-80's.

For the longest time, I could not stand velour. It looked old, bad and just plain ugly. Maybe it was also a result of seeing people wearing it as an entire look from head to toe, aka the Juicy Couture. I think it was just too much for me to handle.

But, my opinion has slightly changed when I saw some valour blousons at American Apparel. I tried one in moss green and it looked just great with my black jeans. I like that odd shine valour has, and it also reminded me of the spring Prada collection as in those jeweled satins. Although, I am still not sure if I am going to purchase one soon, I liked the one in the look above.

the new suit jacket

This is a good twist on a man's classic--the suit jacket. I like the idea of how this jacket is cropped, but still made to match the pants. As I am not the tallest guy around, I would instantly wear this jacket. I cannot express the frustration I endure when I'm looking for a suit jacket. It usually goes along the lines of: too long, too bulky, too business-man looking, too... it's just not right. I have only one suit jacket which I wear to interviews and that's it. Oh, and it needed to be altered 100 times, of course.

I love how this coat fits. Especially, the slim sleeves. Men's coats tend to have loose/bulky sleeves, but this one looks just right. Also, the one button defines the look as more linear.

Today, in New York, we had our first snow for this winter. Quite sad, I know. But that doesn't stop me from thinking about spring, crisp white shirt with rolled sleeves and green tress. Wishes. Hm.

I've been suggesting to my female friends to start wearing loafers this spring with their skinnies instead of ballet flats. It's something very fresh in my opinion, which I think it adds little much more sophistication to the outfit and makes it less Kate Moss-ish. One might think this makes an outfit more uptown and more serious, but then I don't think so. There are many colors to choose from, and also a new season is about change. So, let's hope the sights downtown would be more original this spring.

Just like the collection, the ad campaign for Jil Sander is quiet yet mysteriously strong and very modern. I love the purity of Johanna, her pianist hands and the very calming pose she gives in this photo. 1. Getting more out of the trench coat, as this can be worn everywhere...office, going out, travel.

2. Originality because most likely not many people will own a voluminous trench coat. They will go for the dresses.

This photograph brought back some memories of old 50's photos I've seen around with Marylin Monroe and Arthur Miller. What really caught my attentions is the hazy, almost light dotted technique used for taking this photo. Also, you gather a feeling of closeness from Kelis and Nas, although they are not kissing or holding each other, just like Marilyn and Arthur. I love the way they look at you.. it has so much personality. Notice Kelis' almond shaped eyes and the wonderful lighting falling on her face. What a refined and yet very classy couple.

Legend Claudia Schiffer looks more than stunning in a campaign to promote economy in her native country, Germany. We really need to give credit to Germany's Ministry of Economy and Technology for being so creative and thoughtful for booking one of Germany's biggest and sexiest symbols for the purpose of governmental advertising. But then, their concept is not bad at all. Claudia has signature German features from her eyes to the most talked about perfect blond hair in the 90's. With this, maybe things will go brighter when one sees Claudia's beautiful but yet seductive face and body covered with a German flag.

I find most pants or jeans have that standard, medium width loop. This doesn't always work well with skinny belts because they don't' fill up all the space and end up sitting too low with a big gap unfilled on your pants. Solution? More designers should make pants with shorter width loops such as Nicolas Ghesquiere for Balenciaga.

Is Nina Garcia over? Did "Project Runway" hurt or advance her image? Those questions certainly make me doubt when a creative director is coming on board.

According to news reported in WWD, Elle's future fashion will be in the hands of Joe Zee, a very well known stylist who is contributing to W and was an editor in chief of cancelled Vitals and Vitals Men. There were many rumors of where Mr.Zee would be working after his two magazines were shot down. Keeping a low profile, and declaring that he's not a big partier, Joe Zee can be seen taking walks in Chelsea or grocery shopping in the area. I wonder if he suggested the neighborhood to Vogue's Sally Singer.

I applaud the decision of bringing Mr.Zee to Elle, because his overall taste and design sense is simply stellar. Also, this makes me excited for Elle and what changes he will bring. I expect new page layouts, photographers, and perhaps different sense of what style is at Elle. Most importantly, there will be a big staff change over there very very soon.
